Day 1: Historic Center on Foot

Start your trip in the heart of CDMX, the Historic Center. This area is packed with landmarks, plazas, and affordable eateries.

  • Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución)

The massive main square is free to visit and surrounded by impressive architecture like the National Palace and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Arrive early to avoid crowds.

  • Templo Mayor

Just off the Zócalo, this archaeological site offers a glimpse into Aztec history. Entrance is inexpensive, and you can learn a lot from the onsite museum.

  • Palacio de Bellas Artes

Walk to this stunning art nouveau building. Entry to the main hall is free, and you can admire murals by famous Mexican artists.

  • Lunch at Mercado de San Juan

This market is a great place to try local dishes at low prices. Try tacos, quesadillas, or fresh fruit juices.

  • Walk along Calle Madero

This pedestrian street connects the Zócalo to the Torre Latinoamericana. It’s lively and full of street performers and shops.

  • Torre Latinoamericana Observation Deck

For a small fee, you can get panoramic views of the city. It’s worth it, especially at sunset.

Day 2: Museums and Parks in Chapultepec

Chapultepec Park is one of the largest city parks in the world and offers many budget-friendly activities.

  • Chapultepec Castle

Located on a hill inside the park, the castle has a small entrance fee. It offers history, art, and fantastic views of CDMX.

  • Museo Nacional de Antropología

This museum is a must-see and has a reasonable entrance fee. It houses one of the most important collections of pre-Hispanic art and artifacts.

  • Picnic in Chapultepec Park

Grab some snacks from a local market and enjoy a picnic by the lakes or under the trees.

  • Paseo de la Reforma

Walk along this iconic avenue, especially on Sundays when it closes to cars and becomes a space for cyclists and pedestrians.

Day 3: Explore Colorful Neighborhoods

CDMX has neighborhoods full of charm and culture that are easy to explore on foot or by affordable public transport.

  • Coyoacán

This bohemian neighborhood is famous for its cobblestone streets, plazas, and markets. Visit the Frida Kahlo Museum (booking tickets in advance is recommended). If the museum is out of budget, wandering the neighborhood and visiting local markets is just as rewarding.

  • San Ángel

Known for its colonial architecture and weekend art market, San Ángel is perfect for a relaxed afternoon. The market offers handmade crafts and affordable souvenirs.

  • Dinner at a local fonda

Fondas are small, family-run restaurants offering home-cooked meals at low prices. Try dishes like chiles en nogada or mole poblano.

  • Street Food Tour

Join a budget-friendly street food tour or create your own by hopping between popular street vendors. Look for quesadillas, elotes (corn on the cob), and churros.

  • Visit Roma and Condesa

These neighborhoods are trendy but still have affordable cafes and bakeries. Walk around Parque México and Parque España for a break.

Day 5: Free and Low-Cost Cultural Experiences

There are many free or cheap cultural activities in CDMX that let you experience local life.

  • Museo Soumaya

Free entry to this modern art museum with an impressive collection including works by Rodin and Dalí.

  • Plaza Garibaldi

Visit in the evening to hear live mariachi music. It’s free to enjoy the atmosphere, and you can buy food or drinks at local prices.

  • Attend a Lucha Libre Match

Tickets for wrestling matches at Arena México are affordable and offer a unique cultural experience.

  • Explore local bookstores and cafes

Spend some time in independent bookstores or coffee shops in neighborhoods like Juárez or Centro Histórico.
