Best Things to Do in CDMX

Mexico City, or CDMX, is a destination that offers a rich blend of history, culture, and modern life. Whether you are a first-time visitor or returning to explore more, the city never fails to surprise with its vibrant neighborhoods, incredible food, and fascinating landmarks. I’ve spent time discovering some of the best things to do in CDMX, and I’m excited to share a guide that will help you make the most of your trip.

Explore the Historic Center

The historic center of Mexico City is the heart of the city and a must-visit for anyone wanting to understand its roots. Start at the Zócalo, one of the largest public squares in the world. Here, you can admire the Metropolitan Cathedral, a stunning example of colonial architecture, and the National Palace, home to Diego Rivera’s famous murals depicting Mexico’s history.

Walking around this area, you’ll find many shops, cafes, and street vendors offering local crafts and snacks. Don’t miss the Templo Mayor, an ancient Aztec temple site right next to the cathedral. It’s fascinating to see the layers of history side by side.

Visit Chapultepec Park and Museums

Chapultepec Park is one of the largest city parks in the Western Hemisphere, offering a green escape from the urban rush. Inside the park, you’ll find several museums, including the National Museum of Anthropology, which holds one of the most important collections of pre-Hispanic art and artifacts in the world.

The park also features Chapultepec Castle, perched on a hill with panoramic views of the city. The castle itself is a museum with exhibits on Mexican history and art. Walking through the park’s trails, you might spot locals jogging, families picnicking, or artists painting.

Discover the Neighborhoods of Roma and Condesa

For a more contemporary vibe, Roma and Condesa neighborhoods are perfect. These areas are known for their tree-lined streets, art galleries, and trendy cafes. You can spend hours wandering through the streets, stopping at boutique shops or enjoying a coffee in a cozy café.

Both neighborhoods have a lively nightlife scene with bars and restaurants offering everything from traditional Mexican dishes to international cuisine. The architecture here mixes early 20th-century mansions with modern design, creating a unique atmosphere.

Experience Mexican Cuisine

One of the best things about CDMX is its food scene. From street food stalls to high-end restaurants, the city offers a wide range of flavors. You must try tacos al pastor, a local favorite made with marinated pork cooked on a vertical spit.

For a traditional meal, visit a mercado (market) like Mercado de San Juan or Mercado Roma. These markets offer fresh ingredients, prepared dishes, and a chance to interact with locals. Don’t forget to try churros with hot chocolate or a refreshing agua fresca.

Take a Boat Ride in Xochimilco

Xochimilco is famous for its colorful canals and floating gardens. Taking a boat ride here is a fun and relaxing way to spend a few hours. You’ll float along the canals on a trajinera, a brightly painted wooden boat, while enjoying music from mariachi bands and tasting local snacks sold by vendors on other boats.

This area is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers a glimpse into the city’s pre-Hispanic past. It’s especially lively on weekends when families and friends gather to celebrate.

Visit the Frida Kahlo Museum

Art lovers should not miss the Frida Kahlo Museum, also known as the Blue House, located in the Coyoacán neighborhood. This museum is the former home of the iconic Mexican artist and displays many of her personal belongings, paintings, and photographs.

The house itself is charming, with bright blue walls and a lovely garden. Nearby, you can explore Coyoacán’s cobblestone streets, local markets, and cafes. The neighborhood has a relaxed, bohemian feel that contrasts with the busy city center.

Walk Along Paseo de la Reforma

Paseo de la Reforma is one of the main avenues in Mexico City, lined with monuments, sculptures, and skyscrapers. It’s a great place for a walk or bike ride, especially on Sundays when parts of the avenue close to traffic for pedestrians and cyclists.

Along the way, you’ll see landmarks like the Angel of Independence, a symbol of the city, and the Monument to the Revolution. The avenue connects several important neighborhoods and parks, making it a perfect route to explore different parts of CDMX.

Enjoy the Nightlife and Live Music

CDMX has a vibrant nightlife that caters to all tastes. Whether you want to listen to live jazz, dance to electronic music, or enjoy a quiet drink in a rooftop bar, you’ll find something that fits your mood.

Neighborhoods like Polanco, Roma, and Condesa are popular spots for nightlife. Many venues offer live performances, from traditional Mexican music to contemporary bands. Trying a mezcal or tequila cocktail while soaking in the city lights is a memorable experience.

Practical Tips for Visiting CDMX

  • Transportation: The metro system is affordable and extensive, but taxis and ride-sharing apps like Uber are safer and more convenient for tourists.

  • Safety: Stick to well-known areas, especially at night. Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded places.

  • Language: While many people speak some English, learning a few basic Spanish phrases will enhance your experience.

  • Weather: The city has mild weather year-round, but bring layers as evenings can get cool.
