Airport Guide AICM T1 & T2

Traveling through Mexico City International Airport (Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez, AICM) can be overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. The airport has two main terminals, Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2), each serving different airlines and destinations. Knowing what to expect and how to navigate these terminals can save you time and reduce stress. In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about AICM T1 & T2, from getting there to amenities and tips for a smooth experience.

Getting to AICM Terminals

Mexico City’s airport is located about 5 kilometers east of downtown. Both terminals are accessible by taxi, rideshare, and public transportation. Here’s how to get there:

  • Metro: The Metro Line 5 (yellow line) stops at Terminal Aérea station, which serves Terminal 1. From there, you can walk or take a shuttle to Terminal 2.

  • Bus: Several bus lines connect the airport with different parts of the city. Look for official airport buses for safety.

  • Taxi and Rideshare: Use authorized taxi services or apps like Uber and DiDi. Avoid hailing taxis directly on the street for security reasons.

If you have a connecting flight between T1 and T2, the airport offers a free shuttle bus running every 10 minutes. The ride takes about 10-15 minutes depending on traffic inside the airport grounds.

Airlines and Destinations Served

Understanding which airlines operate from each terminal helps avoid confusion:

  • Terminal 1: This is the larger terminal and handles most international and domestic flights. Airlines like Aeroméxico, American Airlines, Delta, United, and many Latin American carriers operate here.

  • Terminal 2: Mainly serves Aeroméxico and its SkyTeam partners, including Air France, KLM, and Lufthansa.

If you’re flying with Aeroméxico, check your ticket carefully to know which terminal your flight departs from or arrives at, as the airline uses both terminals.

Check-in and Security

Both terminals have multiple check-in counters organized by airline. To save time:

  • Check in online before arriving.

  • Arrive at least 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before domestic flights.

  • Have your passport and boarding pass ready at security.

Security lines can get long during peak hours, especially in Terminal 1. If you have priority boarding or access to lounges, use those lanes to move faster.

Facilities and Services in Terminal 1

Terminal 1 is large and busy, but it offers many services to make your wait comfortable:

  • Lounges: Several airline lounges and pay-per-use lounges are available. For example, the Aeroméxico Salon Premier lounge offers food, drinks, and comfortable seating.

  • Restaurants and Cafes: From quick snacks to sit-down meals, you’ll find options like Starbucks, Vips, and local Mexican cuisine.

  • Shopping: Duty-free shops, souvenir stores, and convenience shops are scattered throughout.

  • Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi is available but can be slow during busy times.

  • Other Services: Currency exchange, baggage storage, medical assistance, and information desks.

Facilities and Services in Terminal 2

Terminal 2 is smaller but modern and well-equipped:

  • Lounges: Aeroméxico’s flagship lounge and partner lounges provide a quiet space to relax.

  • Dining: Restaurants and cafes offer a variety of food, including international and Mexican dishes.

  • Shopping: Duty-free and specialty shops are available.

  • Wi-Fi and Services: Free Wi-Fi, currency exchange, and customer service desks.

Tips for Navigating AICM T1 & T2

Traveling through AICM can be smoother with these practical tips:

  • Know your terminal: Confirm your departure and arrival terminals before heading to the airport.

  • Allow extra time: Security and immigration can take longer than expected.

  • Use the shuttle: If you need to transfer between terminals, use the free shuttle bus.

  • Stay hydrated and comfortable: Bring a refillable water bottle and wear comfortable shoes.

  • Keep an eye on your belongings: Like any major airport, stay alert to your surroundings.

  • Download the airport app: The official AICM app provides real-time flight updates and terminal maps.
